A New Twist On The Traditional Kansas City Doughnut

-->
Strawberries 'n Cream Doughnut
Doughnuts topped with pretzels and candy.  Long Johns dripping in maple frosting and sprinkled with crumbled bacon… It’s all wacky but true at Twisted Doughnut in Overland Park, KS.

Open since 2010, this funky cruller shop is on a mission to reinvent the boring doughnut and give customers choices that are outrageous, sophisticated and tasty.

A few of their original creations include:

Brownie Blings (raised doughnuts with chocolate icing and topped with fresh baked brownie pieces)

Train Wrecks (Long Johns topped with maple frosting and crumbled bacon pieces)

Strawberries ‘n Creams (raised doughnuts filled with cream cheese, fresh strawberries and powdered sugar)

Jelly Bears (raised doughnuts with vanilla icing and topped with gummy bears)

Twisted Doughnut is owned by Jeff and Brandi Martin, who also own Smallcakes, a specialty cupcake business.  In fact, the two Overland Park businesses are located next door to each other in a strip mall and separated on the inside by a doorway with a curtain.

Brownie Bling Doughnut
I visited Twisted Doughnut recently (for the first time) and tried a Brownie Bling and the Train Wreck.  Both were yummy and a fun change from the “usual” glazed doughnut.  Never fear, though.  If you are a “plain doughnut person,” they have those available too.

After visiting Twisted Doughnut, I would put it into the “visit once in a while” category.  It is a great place to pick up some breakfast the morning after your daughter’s slumber party or when pastry-loving out-of-town guests visit.

However, if you do decide to check out Twisted Doughnut, be warned that with its bright purple and blue walls and big Homer Simpson poster, it looks like a teenager did the decorating.  It also has very little seating available, so plan on taking your purchases with you, and lastly, get there early for the best selection of doughnuts.

Inside Twisted Doughnut
Additionally, there is no counter space for customers at the register area.  This is a small detail, but it is annoying.  I wanted to set my purse down to get out my wallet and pay.  I couldn’t because there was no counter space.  Meanwhile, on the other side of the register, the employee had to hold my doughnut box until I was ready to take it because he had no place to set anything down either.

Lastly, they need to have small to-go boxes for people who are only buying a doughnut or two.  I purchased two doughnuts and had to take them home in a big doughnut box  - which allowed the doughnuts to slide around and get a little dinged up before I got home.  Just for the record, though, they still tasted sugary delicious.
